From the stone ages to modern times, men and women expressed many emotions like reverence grief, love, respect, affection, joy with just about every kind of flowers.
Similarly no one is really sure how Valentine's Day got its start; there are as many guess and stories as flowers.
The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages

The language of flowers.
Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.
Ii is one of the few ball games that does not use a fixed standard playing area.
Golf is said to have originated in the Netherlands but has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf, in essentially the form we know today, has been played on Scotland's Musselburgh Links (today the world's oldest golf course) since 1672, while earlier versions of the game had been played in the British Isles and the low-countries of Northern Europe for several centuries before that.
Although often viewed as an upper class pastime, golf is an increasingly popular sport across all sections of society.
In novels, I read about a person's handicap while playing golf.
A handicap is a numerical measure of an amateur golfer's ability to play golf over 18 holes.
What is Wiki?
But I never found out the meaning of wiki till today. Again of course wikipedia is my resource for this.
A wiki is a website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change available content, and typically without the need for registration.
This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring. The term wiki also can refer to the collaborative software itself (wiki engine) that facilitates the operation of such a Web site, or to certain specific wiki sites, including the computer science site (the original wiki) WikiWikiWeb and on-line encyclopedias such as Wikipedia.
In Hawaiian language, 'wiki' means fast.
The distinct advantage of online wikipedia over the traditional volumes of Encyclopedia is the speed with which one can search for information.
The word is sometimes interpreted as the backronym for "what I know is", which describes the knowledge contribution, storage, and the exchange function.
Most wikis are open to the general public without the need to register.

Do you know what is Peer Review?
Peer review is a process of subjecting an author's scholarly work or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the field.
Do you know link baiting?
In order to improve page rank, a website needs hundreds of one way link. To achieve this, one searches for relevant websites or blogs, email the webmaster concerned and ask for a link to be placed in their website or blog pointing to your website or blog.
Wikipedia:
Link bait is any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. Attempts to create link bait are frequently employed in the overall task of search engine optimization.
Typically, users on bulletin boards, newsgroups, social networking websites, or blogs place a link to a website in some copy that further encourages another member or visitor to click. It can be an extremely powerful form of marketing.
Part of successful link baiting is devising a mini-PR campaign around the release of a linkbait article so that bloggers and social media users are made aware and can help promote the piece in tandem.
Do you know Doorway pages?
But thats all I did, never went beyond that. I mean, I never had the courage to submit it to search engines and directories.
I thought I will refresh my knowledge and yours too about doorway page.
Doorway pages are web pages that are created for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending you to a different page.
They are also known as landing pages, bridge pages, portal pages, zebra pages (a humorous arbitrary coinage by Jill Whalen of High Rankings Advisor), jump pages, gateway pages, entry pages and by other names. Doorway pages that redirect visitors without their knowledge use some form of cloaking.
If you click through to a typical doorway page from a search engine results page, in most cases you will be redirected with a fast Meta refresh command to another page. Other forms of redirection include use of Javascript and server side redirection, either through the .htaccess file or from the server configuration file. Some doorway pages may be dynamic pages generated by scripting languages such as Perl and PHP.
But java script was not that popular earlier.
Doorway pages are often easy to identify in that they have been designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings.
Another form of doorway pages, are using a method called Cloaking. They show a version of that page to the visitor, but different to the one provided to crawlers, using server side scripts. They know whether it's a bot or a visitor based on their ip address and/or user-agent.
Many sites now use content rich doorway pages for their pay-per-click campaign landing pages. These doorway pages may employ server side scripting to count click-throughs, visits, and other user actions to assist with marketing data collection.

Do you know potpourri?
But I was told to light a candle placed at the base of a terracotta stand and place the potpourri on the top so that the mild heat generated the fragrance gently.
These are some of the naturally scented plants used in traditional potpourri:
* Cedar wood shavings
* Cypress wood shavings
* Incense-cedar wood shavings
* Juniper wood shavings
* Lavender leaves and flowers
* Mignonette leaves and flowers
* Pinyon pine cones
* Rose flowers, hips, or oil
* Cinnamon bark
* Marjoram
Much modern potpourri consists of any decoratively shaped dried plant material (not necessarily from scented plants) with strong synthetic perfumes (and also often strongly coloured dyes) added, with the scent often bearing no relation to the plant material used.
Sometimes, items which do not originate from plants are mixed in with the potpourri, to give it bulk and to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It is possible to spray scents onto potpourri, however a fixative is needed so that the scent is absorbed. Generally, orris root is used for this purpose.
The word potpourri comes from the French word "pot-pourri," which was the French name for a Spanish stew with a wide variety of ingredients called olla podrida. In English, "potpourri" is often used to refer to any collection of miscellaneous or diverse items.
In ceramics manufacture, a potpourri vase is a vase specifically designed for holding potpourri. In the traditional designs a potpourri container is provided with a pierced fitted lid, through which the scent may slowly diffuse.

The world's most costly substance.
It featured in today's Wikepedia's home page.
The history of saffron cultivation and usage reaches back more than 3,000 years and spans many cultures, continents, and civilisations. Saffron, a spice derived from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus, has remained among the world's most costly substances throughout history.
With its bitter taste, hay-like fragrance, and slight metallic notes, saffron has been used as a seasoning, fragrance, dye, and medicine. Saffron is native to Southwest Asia, but was first cultivated in Greece.
It is widely used in Indian sweets to enhance color and flavour. It is also cultivated in Kashmir valley.
Here is amusing history:
Cleopatra used a quarter-cup of saffron in her warm baths because of its colouring and cosmetic properties. She used it before encounters with men in belief that the saffron would make lovemaking more pleasurable.
Some belief!
Sphinx Signature Trail Mix from Teleflora.
Some of the great and unique corporate gift ideas always originate from Teleflora, a highly dedicated flowers and gourmet gifts shop online for nearly 35 years.
The picture you see below is “Snack Lover's Delight”, a gourmet gift basket sold by Teleflora.
In this gift basket, they have put five most popular snack mixes into an impressive basket. This 3 pound basket includes Sphinx Signature Trail Mix, Royal Blend, Oriental Party mix, Yogurt Trail mix, and Wasabi Peas.
Who says such gourmet gift baskets are meant only for gifting it away; it looks as if I can gift one to myself.
Here is trivia for you:
Wasabi (Wasabia japonica) sounds Japanese, is a member of cabbage family also known as Japanese Horseradish.
Now, coming back to Teleflora, they are a FTD florist which adds credence to their reputation. A customer can get guaranteed same day delivery if ordered as per their timings.

5 Items to NEVER Put in Your Resume.
At least I thought so till read a blog post on the subject matter. This is an eye opener for me and I am sure you also find it very useful. My own students are likely to email Medini, the author of this blog expressing their appreciation.
Excerpts:
1. NEVER PUT YOUR REFERENCES IN YOUR RESUME. Instead, try something like "Professional References Available Upon Request." References are very valuable to you during your job search, and you don't want an HR dept calling them even before they have called you!!
2. NEVER SHOULD YOUR RESUME CONTAIN A PERSONAL INFORMATION OR A PHOTOGRAPH. The Internet and e-mailed resumes makes it very easy to now include your picture with your resume. DON'T!! Companies legally cannot consider your picture in determining if you are to be interviewed, or hired. This would be a violation of most EOE laws. Many companies won't even consider resumes that are submitted with a picture to ensure that they are in compliance with EOE.

Thank you Medini.
Do you know the Grammar Girl?
But then what can I do?; English is not my mother tongue. I do commit grammar mistakes without ever knowing!
I totally depend on the built in spelling grammar check in MS word. Now I have found out a web site to fall back upon and it is called 'Grammar Girl'. It is actually a blog.
My first impression was relief(very selfish). I found extremely interesting topics and explanations there such as 'affect' vs 'effect' and 'between' vs 'among' and so on.
Read this explanation for 'affect' vs 'effect':
"The majority of the time you use affect with an a as a verb and effect with an e as a noun".
Very simple but never thought of it. Does it apply to you too?
Wait gentle man, there are more, much more in this blog than I can give excerpts here.
Share it with as many people as possible.

Do you know Biathlon?
"Biathlon: This event combines the excitement and thrills of two entetaining events and rolls them into one boring package. What happens here is, first the athletes do some shooting and then ski down a mountain slope to escape from the Italian Police. After getting down, they do some more shooting. This year’s biathlon saw some really close competition, with U.S Vice President ‘Dick’ Cheney claiming the gold after shooting the Swedish athlete who was leading near the finish line. " -by Vinod Ganesh of "Mostly Thoughtless"
For die hard bloggers, his blog can be a veritable feast on myriad topics. Above all, like me, he is also a Madrasi or if you prefer 'Chennaiite', though I refuse to recognise the word 'Chennai' because I am an old Madarsi(smile).
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military.
Optimum usage of your gmail account.
I will just post a gist of it and you can read it fully at 'Elegantly Expressed' What a beautiful name for a blog!
"Do you have a multitude of email addresses? Do you waste too much time checking up your emails from various places? Use Gmail to consolidate...
Gmail has a “send from” or “send as” feature that lets you send from any address you’ve proven to be your own. Theoretically, you can make use of your Gmail address to be your universal inbox, and also the account from which you send email from any of the other addresses you own.
Here’s how to do it step-by-step.
How do I customize the 'From:' address on outgoing mail?
If you'd like your outgoing Gmail messages to display another one of your email addresses in the 'From:' field (instead of your Gmail address), just follow these easy steps:
- Log in to your Gmail account.
- Click Settings along the top of any page, and then select the Accounts tab.
- Click Add another email address in the Send mail as section.
- Enter your full name in the Name field, and the email address you'd like to send messages from in the Email address field.
*Keep in mind that each time someone replies to a message you send using a custom 'From:' address, the reply will be delivered to the 'From:' address rather than your Gmail address. If you'd like replies to be delivered to another account, you'll need to enter a 'reply-to' address. Just click Specify a different reply-to address to enter this information."
My excerpts ends here and I request you to click on the link to read fully.Be sure to pass it on please.
Do you know social software?
Ok, I am sure you must have heard 'Groupware'!
Also known as collaborative software, a groupware is a software designed to help people involved in a common task achieve their goals. Collaborative software is the basis for computer supported cooperative work.
Such software systems as email, calendaring, text chat, wiki belong in this category. It has been suggested that Metcalfe's law — the more people who use something, the more valuable it becomes — applies to such software.
The more general term social software applies to systems used outside the workplace, for example, online dating services and social networks like Friendster and OpenBC. The study of computer-supported collaboration includes the study of this software and social phenomena associated with it.
Do you know that electronic calendars (also called time management software) — schedule events and automatically notify and remind group members fall under this category?

Do you know the Peloponnesian War?
The way he narrated such stories would have made him a good film director.
One such narration was about the Peloponnesian War. It was in the front page of wikipedia today and some excerpts from it are given below.
The Sicilian Expedition was an Athenian expedition to Sicily from 415 BC to 413 BC, during the Peloponnesian War. After initial success it turned into an unmitigated disaster for the Athenian forces.
As Thucydides recounts wryly in his History of the Peloponnesian War, the generals leading the campaign had scant knowledge of Sicily, or of its population, and thus the forces marshaled for its conquering were woefully inadequate.
The first phase of the Peloponnesian War had ended with the Peace of Nicias in 421 BC, and Athens and Sparta were nominally at peace in 415. That year, ambassadors from the Sicilian city Segesta (Egesta in Greek) were sent to Athens to request for help in their war against Selinus.
The Segestans brought to Athens enough money to pay for sixty ships for one month. The Athenians had sent fleets to Sicily earlier in the war, and were attracted to the island's wealth in grain and other resources; by helping Segesta, they felt they could gain a foothold in Sicily which could lead to an eventual conquest. As long as Pericles was still alive, he had advised Athens not to overextend their empire, but by now this advice had been all but forgotten.

Do you know OpenID?
You may've heard of OpenID - it's a distributed identity management system, a.k.a. a decentralized single sign-on platform.
The reason they do this is that signing up is actually a big barrier to entry for users of web apps. Users feel more comfortable when they don't have to sign up to use an app - it's much easier to give it a try and it's less time-consuming to start using it. That's why most web sites today try to keep sign up process as short as possible.
Although Google's approach seems more successful now, and the other bigcos have adopted the search-centric model, single sign-on is still a very important paradigm. Therefore OpenID can provide the advantages that Google, Yahoo and MSN have, to all other independent sites - in a decentralized, open fashion.
